My Last Letter To Daddy
This is Melba. I'm one of the five children you left behind,
When you were called to heaven on Tuesday night.
February the eighth, nineteen hundred seventy two.
You know we all miss you
And those twinkling eyes, your big smile.
You made sure everyone who came around
knew you loved God and your fellow man.
You were always cheerful. Never sad and blue.
When we had visitors or just family
I can see you as you invite them in and say,
"Come on in and sit a while".
You always made everyone feel welcome
And never met a stranger.
You never dreamed when the man came to our house
Many years ago he meant you any harm.
You went with him like he asked,
Not realizing your life was in danger.
If the sheriff hadn't come along.
Oh Jesus, I hate to think what
Could have gone wrong.
Without knowing he meant to take your life.
At his trial he threatened your
Whole family with that big knife.
Oh, but Daddy you brought joy and gladness
where ever you went.
You and your Bible were like one.
I often heard you pray and sing,
"I'll go Dear God, where ever I'm sent".
You knew your Bible from page to page.
And loved to talk of the
men from the ancient age.
I guess you are up there now listening to
Paul and Silas, all the men of old,
While they tell you how they lived and
What they did to obtain their crowns of gold.
I know you will get a chance to tell them
of your life here on earth.
How you went about preaching of Our Dear
Savior's crucifixion, resurrection and of His birth.
My Dear Daddy,
I'm so sorry you had to suffer so long,
Before God said, "You can come home."
I know you are happy in
That blessed home of rest.
You are with your babies and bidding
Us to come home to be with the blest.
Daddy, I have to go but I'll see you again some day.
You are always on my mind.
Just as you are on the others you've left behind.
We love you Dear Daddy and miss you but we know
Where you are you are happy.
We just thank God for giving you to us seventy six years,
One month and twenty four days
And we were the ones given the
Privilege of calling you,------"Daddy".
Goodbye Daddy,
Love Melba
