Remembering My Heart

(September 11, 2001)

"Has it really been six months?", I say to myself.
I still think of it as though it had happened yesterday.
Rolling hoses, check the apparatus', and cleaning up the station.
Helping us through the training of each grueling day.

Remembering my heart was pounding like a fire alarm.
They were there beside me, coaching me through my drill.
"Get your bunkers and your helmet on , and jump in the truck".
"You can do it", they encouraged and helping my spirits fill.

A day of preparation over and now life has changed for the better.
Save lives, put out fires, and keep our families safe and sound.
Calls of victims needing us, to protect them from any harm,
Jobs like this are never ending, thank God I'm still around.

Remembering my heart the day we lost our closest friend.
The sky dark and rain falling like mourning tears of grief.
We carried him out of the fire, his body limps without hurt.
In two days we bury him, shocked and in disbelief.

Memories are there to help us through each passing hour.
People live and people die, it's a part of everyday.
Try telling a fireman this and you know what you will hear?
"I'll give my life to make you see that person one more day."

Remembering my heart the day 9/11 claimed so many lives.
I tried to show you I really cared no matter what the cost.
The grief and destruction filled the world with pain and sorrow.
Faith and courage is the only thing we know we never lost.

I hurt for you all of you in your time of mourning.
I will never forget the tears, despair, hopelessness, and grief.
Every heart is still heavy no matter how long it's been.
Desperately hoping there will be some type of relief.

Remembering my heart today as six months hits today.
I will say a prayer and ask for God to comfort you.
Just know I am here for you, each and everyday.
