Army NICKOLIS - MY BROTHER Army

June 4, 1949 to December 25, 2001

This page is done in memory of my brother, Nicky. I miss him very much. I hold onto many good memories to carry me through. He was a friend that many never get to have, someone always there to fight for me and to believe in me.

Nicky was a special brother that God gave to me when I was 13 and he was 10. My dad married his mom and there was he was - a brother! For us, we were always just brother and sister, no step word added. We had the same likes and dislikes and shared a lot of good friends. We also fought like any normal brother and sister did.

Nicky decided at 17 to join the Army. He wanted to go to Vietnam but was too young. Right after his 18th birthday, he went off to Nam. He was going to sign up for an extra year after he served his time over there. A close friend was already over there and he was looking forward to seeing him again. However, the day before my brother arrived, his friend stepped on a land mine and died. When my brother got there, learned about his friend, he wrote me a letter. He asked me to “pray him home safe”. His friend’s death hit him very hard. I am proud to be the sis of a soldier that served our country, the United States of America for my freedom.

I struggled with the death of my brother and just could not come to peace with the fact that he was gone. September 2004, a friend lost her brother and I wanted to do something special for her. I prayed and God gave me this poem about my brother. My gift from God (this poem) became my gift to my friend.

My Brother

He’s gone from me and I’m brokenhearted
From our world & family, he has parted
I wondered why God took him from me
Trust the Lord – it’s the way it should be

God knows my pain; he sees my tears
He knows my heart and all my fears
He holds me tight as I cry to sleep
Staying close to Him, forever to keep

My mind brings forth words left unsaid
Thoughts go wandering through my head
Some thank yous and memories to be told
A few stories to share and a poem of old

What would my brother say to me
If right now, he was here to see
He’d encourage me to go on my way
Keep sharing God’s love every day

So, I’ll stay close to God, as you can tell
Walking with Jesus, then all will be well
Letting Him carry me through dark days
Keeping my brother in my heart always
