:: The Castleberry Craft Page! ::

Here, you will find crafts of all sorts which have been enjoyed by our family. The children and I love doing crafts together. It is very educational for all of us, even little Hannah! I hope you find something here that sparks your interest! I will be adding things all the time so check back often!

(these two play-dough recipes were given to me by a very sweet lady from my church)

Children's Play Dough
(edible)

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1/2 cup water
1 tsp. vinegar
food coloring
1/4 tsp. peppermint extract

Mix flour and salt in large bowl. Slowly add water and vinegar. Mix and stir until stiff. Pick it up and knead until pliable. Divide dough into separate pieces for each color desired. Poke finger into center of each piece and drop food coloring and peppermint extract into the hole. Knead until color is uniform and dough is smooth.

Store tightly covered in refrigerator. Keeps several months. Can be reused.
To use: remove from refrigerator and let set 5 minutes. Will air dry in 24 hours or in 200 degree warm oven for 2 hours.

Baker's Craft Dough

4 cups unsifted flour (white)
1 cup salt
1 1/2 cups water

optional:
1 tblsp. powdered alum
1 tblsp. cooking oil
1/4 tsp. food coloring
1/4 tsp. oil of cloves or peppermint extract

for finishing:
acrylic paints
spray acrylic fixative
clear shelac o Gesso or clear nail polish

Mix flour, salt and alum if you're using it. Slowly stir in water, oil, coloring and scent. Keep mixing until dough follows spoon around the bowl, then knead with your hands until smooth. (approx. 1 minute) Store dough in refrigerator until ready to use. (up to 4 weeks) Warm to room temperature before using.

To use: Generously flour whole surface. Pinch off only enough dough to work with, keeping rest of dough in sealed, plastic bag. Fill a small bowl with water to use as glue to stick two pieces together.

Ideas: use garlic press to simulate hair. Cover thin areas with foil to prevent burning. Poke holes and add metal hangers before baking. Bake finished item in 250 degree oven at least an hour. Let cool before painting.
