Foreign Languages
Looking for an idea for an young student interested in a foreign language, but don't want to do any formal learning of a language? When our daughters were younger, our family just bought 2 CD's from Teach me Tapes Inc. The CD's contain popular children's songs sung in English, and the language chosen for that CD. Through these CD's the child can get a feel for the sound of that language, and learn how to say basic words in that language like: mother, father, brother, dog, house, numbers, the alphabet, good morning, good night, the days of the week . . . Some of the songs on the tapes may include: The More we Get Together, Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes, Mary Had a Little Lamb, The Wheels on the Car, Jack and Jill, and Six Little Ducks, with several others. Suggested age for these CD's are for ages 2-12.
Here are links to curriculum to the formal study of foreign languages.
www.rosettastone.com This is the program that our family uses. It is computer based and set up for independent learning. No English is spoken in the program, just the language that is being learned, and pictures. This way the student learns to speak the language in the same way they learned to speak as a baby.
The next links are to other programs that I have not viewed personally.
The Learnables This is a beginning and intermediate foreign language course made so that a child can learn the language on their own without a tutor. There is no special teachers guide. Made for ages 7 through adult. You can also buy a CD containing Bible stories told in Spanish, German or French. (This comes separate from the curriculum.)
