One of the first Coley's on record in our early family history was a Samuel Coley who came to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1631 and was one of the 44 original planters who settled in Milford, Connecticut in 1639 and died there in 1690. He married Anne Pruden in 1640 and they had seven children--three sons and four daughters. All of his children settled close around Milford with their parents but Thomas, born 20 Apr 1657, and married Martha Stream, and migrated to Virginia. He had two sons, Thomas, (Jr?) baptized 4/8/1696 and Samuel, baptized 1 Nov 1702 and died 2 Feb 1703/1704. It is believed our Virginia Coleys originated from Thomas, son of Thomas, who, among his children could have been Francis, Julius, Robert, Charles and Isham Coley, these sons migrating to NC., but, of course, this is still on the research list to be connected at a later date. So we start the numbering of the lineage from Robert because we have not been able to connect it any further back. |

1. Robert Coley having sold land in Charles City County, VA in 1771 moving to Halifax County, NC leaving a will dated 25 June 1785 naming his wife, Frances
and two sons, Francis and William. No information available at this time on William. Certain Record Books link him to a Francis CORLEY of Trousdale County, but Census records show a Francis Corley of Trousdale County and also a Francis Coley of Smith County. Francis d 19 Sept 1840 in Smith County, (before Macon County was formed in 1842) and is believed to be buried in a unmarked grave in the Coleytown Cemetery in Macon Co., TN. The earliest found record of Francis Coley in TN was a Land grant #6874 for 50 acres on record in Smith Co., dated Sept 19, 1827, which probably was made a part of Macon County when it was formed. He served in the Revolutionary War as a private having fought in the Battle of Brier Creek in Savannah, Ga., and in the Battle of Guilford, N. C. It is unknown when he got married or to whom. The following are believed to be
some of his children:

of Abel G. Coley: was honorably discharged from the army of the United States due to disabilities. He was born Feb 7, 1833, son of J. C.& Mary Ann Coley, and when the War came between the North and the South he was twenty eight years of age. His sentiments were strongly with Abe Lincoln and the Union, and on the 25th day of Oct 1861, he volunteered in the Regiment of 9th Kentucky, but he was only privileged to serve eight months and twenty three days, as in the battle of Shiloh, which was one of the bloodiest battles of the war, raging for two days, April 6 and 7th, 1862, Pvt Coley was wounded four times, one a very severe wound when he was shot in the head, on the second day of the battle. Three months later he had recovered sufficiently to return to his home in Monroe Co., and though he was an invalid
for sometime, he became able to live a normal useful life. two sons, John Jim, and Willie Coley, and four daughters, Mary Frances Coley Huskisson, Minnie Coley Robinson, Sarah Coley Lawrence, and Elizabeth Ann Coley Woodrum. For many years Abel Coley owned and operated a general store in the New Design community near Fountain Run. He was also a Baptist preacher of quite some note, and the name of Bro."Abe" Coley, was widely known in this section. He died November 28th, 1900 at the age of 67 years. Much of this information was gleaned from the certificate of his G.A.R. and his War Record which proudly hangs in the home of Abel Coley's grandson, Patrick Huskisson, at Fountain Run., KY. It has been well preserved through the long years and is displayed in a beautiful antique frame. Previous to it coming into the possession of Mr. Huskisson, it hung in the home of his parents, Billy and Mary Frances Coley Huskisson. At its very top it is centered with a picture of the Capitol of the United States, with the Eagle and the Stars and Stripes below. On either side are pictured presidents up to that time.Directly below the War Record are the pictures of the officers of the Union Army with the various military insignia. On the left from the top are pictured phrases of the War that include "The Attack on Fort Sumpter" April 12, 1861 "Battle of Shiloh"
The Fleet passing Forts Jackson and St. Philip April 24th 1862." On the right from the top are pictured "The Battle of Gettysburg" July 1 to 3, 1863" The Anderson- ville Prison" "On to Richmond in a rainstorm May 14th 1864." Below are the following pictures," Burying of the Dead at Night" "Sheridan's Ride Oct. 19th., 1864." Death of Gen. McPherson, July 27th., 1864." Surrender of General Lee April 9th.,1865." And at the very bottom are pictured "Decoration of the graves of the War Dead" and "The Army Returning Home 1865." We feel this War Record Picture is a museum piece, and it is deeply treasured by descendents of Private Abel G. Coley, 9th Kentucky Regiment.
