  Brawner Family Genealogy 

                     

 

I. Dozier Brawner is the first of the family of whom we have any 

    record, He and his wife, Jennie, last name unknown, came from 

    Virginia after the War of 1812, Dozier and Jennie Brawner    

    were the parents of :

    2.  John Brawner, who went to West Tennessee; 

    2  Jerry Brawner, the ancestor of many of the living Brawner's 

       in Macon and surrounding counties; 

    2  Henry Brawner, who married Miss Polly Gammon, the  

       daughter of  James Gammon; 

   2. Meredith Brawner, supposed to have married ____________ 

        Witcher;
   
2.  Betsy Brawner, married John Gammon, a brother of Polly
        Gammon, wife of Henry Brawner; 

   2.  Billie Brawner, of whom we have no record whatever.

  2. Brawner, Jeremiah M. "Jerry", born 1800/02 in VA;  

       age 48 in 1850 Macon County Census; age 70 in 1870  

       Census; died 24  Apr 1895 in Macon County, TN; married  

       (1) unknown (2) Sarah  "Sallie" Shrum. He enlisted at  

       Columbia, TN on 15 Nov 1861 in Co I of the 9th  

       Regiment KY Inf. Jeremiah in the 1850 Census of
       Macon County, age listed as 48; wife Sarah's age listed as  

       28. His mother Jane Brawner is living in the household  

       also. He had several children in the home. Jeremiah and  

       Sarah Shrum had daughter and a son. Children are:

       3. Brawner, Nancy, b 1835 TN; age 15, md (1) Ed Shrum. 

           They had a daughter:  Nancy md (2) John Garrett .           

 

   

          4. Shrum, Malvina, born 1868, age 2 in the 1870  Macon 

             County Census. She md Tom Brawner. They had several

             children.

    3.  Brawner, William, went to Illinois.

    3.  Brawner, Elizabeth "Betsy", never married.

    3.  Brawner, Matilda, born around 1840 in what is now Macon
        County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Jeremiah and 

        Sarah Shrum Brawner. The 1860 Macon County, Tennessee 

        Census showed them living in their own household. It was at 

        that time that Stephen Jeremiah Dixon was 30 years of age 

        and Matilda was 20 years old. In 1860 the family was noted 

        living in the Civil District 7 of Smith County, Tennessee. On 

        19 Oct 1861for a period of 12 months at Hartsville, 

           Tennessee. He was assigned to serve with Co E. 22nd 

        (Barteau's) Calvary Confederate Army. He was a prisoner of 

        war from 31 Mar 1863 until 11 Aug 1863. After this time 

        Stephen Jeremiah Dixon was paroled at McMinnville, TN.

               

         The 1880 Macon County, Tennessee Census showed that 

        Stephen Jeremiah and Matilda were living in Civil District 10 

        of Macon County, TN. Matilda passed away around 1885 in 

        Macon County, TN during a house fire. Stephen Jeremiah 

        Dixon passed away around 1890. They are both buried at 

        the Barnfield/Shrum Cemetery in the Civil District 4 of 

        Macon County, TN. The following are the known children 

        of Stephen Jeremiah and Matilda Brawner Dixon:

          4. Martha Sarah "Bit" Dixon, born 1 Jan 1856. She was
              married 3 times (a) Barton Carter, (b) William Carter and
              (c) James Butler. She passed away on 3 Mar 1943 at Civil
              District 14 of Sumner County, TN. She was buried on  

              4 Mar 1943 at Bethpage Cemetery in Sumner County, TN.

         4.  Mary Frances "Fanny" Dixon, born 5 July 1864 in Macon
              County, TN. She was married to Samuel  Sullivan. She passed
              away on 19 Nov 1945 Bethpage, Sumner County, TN. She
              was bur on 20 Nov 1945 at the Bethpage Cemetery in
              Sumner County, TN. (Source-Tennessee Death Certificate)

         4.  Lavina Belle "Belle" Dixon, born 10 Feb 1866 in Macon
             County, TN; died 25 May 1939 in Macon County, TN.; md
             (a) John Shrum (b) Thomas Andrews. She was buried at the
             Barnfield/Shrum Cemetery in Macon County, TN.

        4.  Lucinda Jane Dixon, born 17 June 1869 in Macon County,
            TN; died 2 Feb 1938 in Robertson County, TN.; married
            2 Oct 1897 in Smith County, TN., Richard Andrews. She was
            buried in the Barnfield/Shrum Cemetery in Macon County,
            TN.(Source- Tennessee Death Certificate.)

          4.   Jeremiah Richard Dixon, born 15 Feb 1870 in Macon
            County, TN; died 23 Jul 1958 in Robertson County, TN;
            married Sarah Jane Gregory. He was buried in the    

            Providence Cemetery in Simpson County, KY.

      4.  Marinda Ellen "Ren" Dixon, born on 5 May 1874 in Macon
           County, TN; died 17 Dec 1943 at Sumner County,  

           Tennessee; married Benjamin Moses Gregory. She was  

           buried 20 Dec 1943 at the Old Bush Cemetery in Sumner

3. Brawner, Sarah Rebecca, D/O of Jeremiah and Sarah Shrum
     Brawner. She was born around May 1843. She left Macon County,
     Tn. before the Civil War to Missouri with her husband, John Willis.
     Family tradition says that her husband died in that war and she
     came back with a child on her hip. Sarah Rebecca was living in her
     parent's household (Jeremiah and Sarah Brawner) in 1850. In the
     1860 Macon County, Tn. census she was married and living with

     
her husband, John Willis. In 1869, there was a lawsuit noted in
     Macon County, Tn. that involved her oldest daughter and her
     (listed as a Highlett). This lawsuit was over the land of Martha's
     grandfather, Andrew Willis and listed her daughter, Martha Jane
     Willis, as the only child of John Willis. The 1870 census, it is
     unknown where she is. She was noted in the Macon County, Tn
     census in 1880, 1900 as Sarah Rebecca Shrum and in the 1910
     census as Sarah E. Shrum. The 1900 and 1910 censuses listed her
     as a widow with having 7 children. Family tradition also says that
     she was married a total of 3 times. Once to John Willis, a Hightower
     (or Highlett) and then to a Shrum.

            four more children listed in 1880 Census:

           5.  Brawner, George R., age 1, born 1869

           5.  Brawner, Peyton A., age 9, in 1880 census, b 1871?

           5.  Brawner, Charles F (Franklin)., age 5, b 1875; md Maggie
                Uhles. Some of their children are known:

                     TN.

      4.  Brawner, Peter H., age 5, born 1845.

      4.  Brawner, Martha Adeline, b 31 Dec 1848; d 23 Aug 1936; 

           md 9 Jan 1876 Joseph L. Cartwright, b 9 Feb 1855 in Macon  

           County, TN.,  son of Enoch George and Sallie Waters Cartwright.  

           Joseph served as deputy sheriff in Macon County, TN and was  

           killed on 8 Sept 1895.  They both are buried in unmarked  

           graves in Bradley Cemetery in Macon County, TN.

 

 3.  Brawner, Dozier, (Jr?), age 25 (in 1850 census), born 1825, 

      believed to be son of Jeremiah, living and working as a farmer 

      in the Howell Hargis household.

 3.  Brawner, Malvina married a Lovelady and went to Arkansas, and
       had two daughters, names uknown.

 3.  Brawner, Martha married a Shrum and went to Arkansas and we
       have no further record. 

 3.  Brawner, William, age 14, born 1836.

 3.  Brawner, Elizabeth, age 12, born 1838; listed as still at home in
       
1870 Macon County Census. She was 24 at that time.

 3.  Brawner, Rebecca, age 7, born 1843, md Hiram Willis and had
      daughter;

       4.  Willis, Jane md Cleary Andrews.

 3.  Brawner, John, age 5, born 1845.
