On 18 Apr 1877 John acquired 40.111/4 acres certificate

warrant #7325. He had a school located on his land according

to a book by Berthel Adams titled “Trailing Smokes” A

Pictorial History of Ider, AL School District the “Shrader

School” started in 1900 in a log dwelling house about a mile

from York’s Mill Dam a few miles North of Ider, AL. It was a

community school. The place was torn down in 1904 or

1905 and children had to go to “Beulah’s Chapel School” The

place is now owned by Darrnell Allen’s people. The teachers

were Mattie Brown “Latty”, Ida Blevins, Allie Smith, John Keys

and Mary Latty.

team of run away mules while hauling compost on his farm

in Chattanooga Valley, GA. (He died on the next day as his

1^st ousin buried same day “Tall Henry” my grandfather)

J. A. Milligan. His first song was published in 1931 titled

“There Is a Home For Me” he considered these songs his most

popular: “When the Home Bells Ring” “On the Solid Rock”

“Home Sick for Heaven” “Let Me Live Close to Thee” “The

Lord is My Shepherd” He taught in about 30 Singing schools.
