3 Robert Pedigo,(Robin) born bet 1726-28; died intestate in Henry

      Co., VA. 19 Jan 1822; married Mary Elkin. Robert and Mary's children

      are: Joseph, Henry, Elizabeth, Robert Jr., Mary, Elijah, Ruth, Amy,   

      Phoebe, Moses and John L.(?).  

.(The Name change to "Pedigo" is probably due to a pronounciation quirk which stuck. "). Born about 1726 or 28; died 19 Jan 1822, Franklin Co., Va., married about 1760, to Mary Elkin, Halifax Co. Va. Issue 10 or 12 children. Possibly married twice, 9 Nov. 1802, Henry Co., Va., Robert Pedigo, Sr., & Feaby, his wife.

"Robin and Edward, his younger brother, were of French descent, living in Maryland, at the ages of 12 and 8 respectively, with their father Henry and stepmother. They played a prank on their stepmother, and when she was going to have them punished, they ran away from home. They explained to their imme-diate descendants that they fled from the oppressions of a tyrannical stepmother. The story goes that this stepmother was a devotee of fashion and of the gayeties of society and that she pressed the two stepsons into all sorts of menial service and did not give them any opportunity of education. Under the stress of this situation the older boy, Robert, being sent to drive in a herd of milk cows one afternoon, failed to return. Later, he began to worry about the younger brother whom he had left to the tender mercies of the dreaded stepmother. He went back and succeeded in getting a clandestine interview with the younger brother, then only eight years of age, and persuaded him to go with him.

An interesting item in the story is that the stepmother was especially proud of her fair and beautiful complexion. Among other precautions, she usually set aside a jug of milk with which to wash her face the next morning. The two boys, before their final departure, gathered up a lot of green walnuts, squeezed the juice from them and poured it into the jug of milk and shook it up. It is a pity that the boys did not hang around and observe the effect of that mixture on the complexion of the lady and report that to their posterity.

The two brothers wandered as far as the York River Valley in Virginia remaining there until they were grown men. Then they worked their way through the wilderness to the south Piedmont Region of Virginia to the locality now covered by Henry and Patrick Counties. They were among the pioneers in the region and took up large areas of land under royal grants. Robert settled on the north side and Edwin on the south side of the Smith River. Any well-informed surveyor in Henry County to this day can point out a very ancient tree known as Pedigo's Corner. This colonial landmark is on Mulberry Creek near the town of Martinsville, VA.

Robert Peregoy, or Pedigo, as the name came to be spelled in that generation, made his home on the watershed of the Leatherwood Creeks. He lived in this locality through the period of the Revolution. He did not fight in the Revolution, would not fight, and if he had fought he would have fought on the English side. In fact he was so strong a Tory in this conviction that he would not allow his horse or his gun to be used in the Revolutionary cause.

The evolution of the name Pedigo received a new impetus at this time. In investigating some old records in Henry County, one deed of Robert's was found where the family name was spelled five different ways. For example: Peregoy, Pedigoy, Pedigoe, and Pedigo. All the Pedigos in the South are descended from these two runaway brothers. They are scattered from the Potomac to the Rio Grande. Wherever, you meet them you will find among them a well crystallized tradition that they descended from the Perogords of Southern France and that royal blood flows in their veins. The name Perigord, from which Peregoy and afterwards Pedigo are derived, is an extremely ancient and illustrious name in France.

Robert, born about 1726-28, died 19 Jan 1822. His estate was sold 13 Feb 1822. Family tradition has it that he ran away from his Maryland home at the age of 12, with his brother Edward, only 8 at the time, to escape "the oppressions of a tyrannical stepmother". If Providence Corbin was that stepmother, she was NOT married to Henry Peregoy until 14 Jan 1745, (old calendar). Robert would have been AT LEAST 18 at the time of this marriage, if born by 1726. But "tradition" always tends to exaggerate extremes of youth and age. And D. Lewis Gravely Pedigo, of Roanoke, VA., and great grandson of the above Robert, was dealing out "family tradition" in his letter of 17 Jan 1924 to Mrs. C. E. Miles, of Richmond, VA.

Local land records prove that Hannah Elkin was the wife of Edward Peregoy on an 1800 Grantor Deed. Robert married Hannah's sister, Mary Elkin. Both brothers were listed in Henry Co., VA. In separate house-holds (with one poll each) in VIRGINIA TAXPAYERS, 1782, on a supplementary listing.

Robert Pedigo who died intestate in Henry Co., VA. 19 Jan 1822, probably had older children at that time in KY and TN.

Accounts returned for public sale of his estate, 12 Feb 1822 (Henry Co., VA Will Book 3, pp 23,24) list the five younger children of Robert, together with other buyers attending the sale, including Joseph Pedigoe, Administrator. Names of all the children of Robert and Mary (Elkin) Pedigo taken from quit claim deeds recorded in 1823 (Henry Co. Deed Books) have been amplified from other records.
