3 Shrader, Daniel, Sr. born 24 Mar 1798 in VA; (His great grandparents were from Germany) died 7 July 1887 at 89 years of age; md Martha Patricia “Patsy” Blancett, b 12 Oct/Nov 1800 in KY; dau of Peter and Lucy Blancett. d 4 July 1884 in Jackson Co., AL Daniel Shrader, on December 12, 1816, sold his farm and land, 107 acres of land & 91 acres and 6 acres. to Philip Thurmond of Bluefield, VA. This is when Daniel and his brother Henry decided to leave Amherst Co., VA which now is Bluefield, VA, to move to AL. There was also a man named George Shrader which was on the census report of 1810, who remained in Bluefield, VA because he was listed on the next Census report taken 1820 after they had departed. When they reached TN they had to settle there for several years, because of the birth of his two sons. Henry was the name of his first son of which I am a descendent and he was born in Bell Buckle, TN on 2 Oct 1821, and he was named after his father’s brother Henry, who was traveling with him and who settled there, in that part of TN. A lot of his descendents still live in that area today.
There are as many Shraders that live in that part of TN and are buried there as there are in Alabama today, which is where my ancestors came to.
When Henry grew up and got married and had children, he named his first son George (born 19 May 1843) which leads one to conclude the George in VA was his Dad’s brother because Daniel, Jr. (his 2nd son that was born Sept 1822 ) also named one of his son’s George, born in 1875.
On 8 Oct 1822 Daniel bought 390 acres from Thomas Hopkins registered 20 Oct 1823 (Warren Co. TN Deed Book pg 398). Daniel decided to move to AL where the land was plentiful because they were moving or (forcing) the Indians off their land, and about 1/3 of Alabama was still an Indian reservation. This was when the Trail of Tears happened.
They crossed the Tennessee river into AL and stopped in Huntsville, AL for supplies and directions as to where the land that was coming available was located. So they set out in that direction and started looking for a suitable home with plenty of water. Daniel Shrader, Sr. was the first to find water, so he fired his gun up into the air to signal to the others he found water, as they had agreed to do. His gun shot led the others to the spring at New Hope, AL. He was the first white man to drink from that spring. They came back later to settle there close to New Hope near where Bob Barrentine barn now stands. On Sept 1, 1848 he acquired 39.68 ¼ acres of land in Jackson County, AL., Certificate or warrant #10663.

* America Armelda Runnels Shoffett* (Wife of Henry)
(Received E-mail saying that "Americus Runnels was not a Shoffet, that was a different wife. There are actual records of the time stating that she was NOT Indian. The gravestone was placed in the 1970s or 80s, by well-meaning but uninformed descendants.")
