| Beloved, Let us Love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. I John 4:7 |
His clothing was worn and old and he was covered in bugs and dirt. I had on too much makeup.
You would not think that two such unlikely people would eventually be celebrating 30 years of wedded bliss, but we are. On that first day, though, we must both have looked as unlikely a pair as anyone could imagine.
Dan helped run his dad's ranch in that little community of Loving, New Mexico. He had horses which were ridden for work, not pleasure. He shot rifles and handguns. Dan Moore drove a pickup and listened to western music. He used farm equipment to plant and harvest alfalfa and cotton and he got dirty as a normal course of his job. In other words, he was the epitomy of the American dream, working hard at a dirty job and loving every minute of it. He actually had spurs and wore them!
By contrast, I can't recall ever being really dirty in my life up to that time. I'd never seen a gun other than in western movies and horses were for petting (from the other side of the fence) if I happened to see any. Up until that fateful day, my life was consumed with the stage, either in dancing or acting. I think I had already accepted that I would never be famous, but I loved performing anyway. I had just finished my first year of college with some minor success in drama and dance and was looking forward to returning so I could take on some really serious roles - never mind that I looked about 12 or 8. I was ready for Shakespeare!
But Dan's dad was the president of the Loving School Board and my dad was the newly hired superintendent of schools so we were destined to meet - a hard working "grungy" cowboy and a dilettante college actress. Of course, it had to be love at first sight.
Being wise in this one point at that early age of 18, I accepted that my life had changed forever that fateful day, although I would not admit, even to myself, that I had been destined to love and marry a man who thought nothing of driving the winrower (large hay-cutting machine) right into town, right up to my front door and marched right into my house wearing a torn T-shirt and covered with dead bugs (from cutting hay).
Dan explains it this way.
His parents had invited mine, along with myself and my little brother, for dinner. Being a "snooty" college girl, I decided I really wasn't interested in meeting the farmer's son, so I politely declined the invitation. Dan got mad. He had dressed up in his finest and polished his cowboy boots to impress me and I didn't show up! So there he was, the next day, covered in bugs to tell me what he thought of my rudeness. All I remember was looking into the most georgeous pair of blue eyes I'd ever seen and hearing a roaring in my ears!

So here we are, 33 years later, so thankful to God that He saw fit to bring together a disreputable looking cowboy and a stage-struck college girl with too much make-up. We have a beautiful daughter and now a beautiful granddaughter (and grandson) and we're still so in love. We only know that from the beginning of our time together, we've acknowledged God in our lives. We haven't always attended church faithfully, but we are consistant in our Bible study and prayer every morning. Dan and I are joyful tithers and givers and we can see God working in our lives.
I share our story with you here so I can tell you how much we both want to see others experience what we have, the love and trust of a marriage born of God and being lived out as part of God's plan. For those of you who are married, give your honey a hug and a kiss. For those who would like to be married, go to God first. Ask Him to show you who He had in mind. Who knows? Your happiness might lie in the arms of the most unlikely person you could ever imagine!
Thank you God, for my Danny and our marriage!
