Gentleness is the conduct which shows graciousness and kindly disposition towards others. God's children ought to be gentle people, with good manners and respect one for another.
As Christians, we like to help people, but sometimes we are not very gentle. Sometimes we think people ought to hurt a little when we help them out of the mess they are in. We tend to think and act with, "You got yourself into this mess, and I am going to help you get out; however, you need to hurt a little so you will remember it." However, if the gentleness of Christ flows through us, we will not want to hurt them.
Be gentle in your dealings one with another. You do not have to be rude. When you see your brother in a fault, be gentle with him.
Galatians 6:2
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Gentleness is understanding:
- a listening ear
- a hand on the shoulder
- the empathetic smile
- a shoulder to cry on
- a hug for the hurting
- a soft word of assurance
Gentleness, which is the opposite of harsh, comes from the heart of God and must be in our hearts if we are to follow and imitate Him. It is patience and longsuffering with our stumbling fellow human beings, so much like us.
Gentleness is, in a word, LOVE!
