That's right ... I've moved! After living in Simi Valley, CA
for almost 30 years, I moved to Placerville in September
2006. The picture on the background and header of this page
were taken in our yard.
After leaving Countrywide in June, I went on disability due to a bad back. Sitting at a desk 8 hrs a day was almost unbearable! Since I was not working, I went on a 7 week cross-country trip with my cousin, Hal. Once we got back I came up to visit my folks and realized they were needing some help. As I was no longer working, the logical thing to do was to move in and help them. As I look back, I can see the Lord's hand working in my life, from my job loss at Countrywide, to my move here to Placerville. I cook all meals for my folks, do laundry, some cleaning, run errands and take them to Dr appointments as necessary. |

My sister, Vicki, lives close-by in Diamond Springs. Up until I moved here she was helping the folks as best she could while trying to maintain a full-time job. Needless to say, she is very happy I am now here. We are both looking forward to spending time with each other. | |
| My dog, Sugar, is finally beginning to settle in to her new home.  At first the folks dog, Chulie, wasn't real happy with her new dog friend, but she is beginning to accept her. |

| The folks have a beautiful home with a fantastic view of the mountains. In the distance you can see the mountains around Lake Tahoe. |

Let me tell you a little bit about my new location. We
live out in the country about 8 miles from town. You may
be asking just where is Placerville, CA? It is located in the
beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about half-way
between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe.

| Dry Diggins (which eventually became Placerville) was the first of thirty mining camps to spring up around Coloma, where gold was discovered in 1848. The same year, ranchers discovered rich deposits of gold in the river beds and hills and hauled out $17,000 in one week from a dry gulch. Dry Diggins became the town’s first name. In the fall of 1849, vigilante justice created a new name for the town, Hangtown, where criminals met their death, dangling from the end of a rope tied to the branch of a giant oak tree on the town's main street. Only the stump of the old hanging tree remains, hidden in the cellar of a bar on Main Street. |

By 1854, Hangtown had become the third largest town in CA,
surpassed only by San Francisco and Sacramento. Placerville
had been suggested as the town name as early as 1850 because of
the Placer gold deposits found in the river beds and hills and
became official town name when the city was incorporated in 1854.
On July 6, 1856, Placerville was nearly destroyed by a fire. As local mining declined, the town gained new life from the Comstock silver strike in Nevada in 1859.
An important historic landmark that still remains on Main Street is the Bell Tower. The Bell, placed in the tower in the plaza in 1865, was used as an alarm system to call out the firefighters. It has watched most of Placerville's history pass beneath it for well over 100 years. It's been remodeled, relocated, and renovated. Today it proudly stands as a monument to honor our city's volunteer firemen. As a growing community, the City of Placerville remains the hub of the Mother Lode. Industry has turned from mining to lumber, agriculture, light manufacturing, tourism and recreation. It serves as the hub for many nearby destinations and activities. Premier wineries, Apple Hill Ranches, Historic Coloma, where gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, Gold Bug Park & Mine, the American River, and the El Dorado National Forest are all located within minutes of downtown. A big part of Placerville's activities are the downtown festivals and special events. These festivals celebrate local history, agriculture, music, food and culture. Some of the more popular events are Art & Wine Festival, the Bell Tower Brewfest, Craft and Antique Fairs, Classic Car Shows, the Hangtown Parade, the Jazz Festival and the Festival of Lights that signals the start of the busy holiday season.
As a Christian, one of the first things I did after moving here was to locate a church. I am now happily attending and have moved my membership to Bible Baptist Church and am getting to know my new pastor and church family. I am looking forward to getting to know more about this beautiful and historical area I am now living in. From what I hear, there are lots of things to do, places to visit and activities I can become involved in. Of course, my first priority here is to be here for my folks and see that their needs are met. |
