As a pilot my Dad has always had a love for flying, from his time
as a Liasion Pilot during WWII, to owning a plane, and even today
the property he lives on has a private airstrip on it. Charlie,
a friend of his, had been over one day and while talking Dad said
something to the fact he'd love to go flying again, especially in
an open-air cockpit. Charlie had connections to a pilot that
had a plane that would fit the bill. He made arrangements for Pilot
Dan to fly in, land on Dad's private airstrip and take him flying.
The date was set for Wednesday, March 5, 2008. We were all
pretty excited that Dad was going flying again right off his own
airstrip. He on the other hand, seemed rather laid-back about
the whole thing, saying "It's not that big a deal." But when
the day arrived, he was excited, carrying the phone around with
him all morning waiting for calls from Charlie and Dan. Then
when the plane lined up to land Dad was in his golf cart and
GONE! He of course was headed for the runway and when I
tried to get him to wait for Mom, he just kept going ... I guess
he was pretty excited after all.
Below are some pictures from that day
