What America’s future holds for me evolved from events in history.
1911: The 1st transcontinental flight
took off from New York in the dawn’s morning light.
1913: Then Henry Ford’s belt assembly line
began building cars one at a time.
1915: The first transcontinental telephone call
made communication easier for all.
1916: The first woman elected to congress,
Jeannette Rankin, strived for progress.
1920: The League of Women Voters was founded one day
in 1920 and remains today.
1928: When Huey Pierce Long claimed victory,
social reform made history.
1935: The Committee for Industrial Organization we know
brought the Taft-Hartley Act and AFL-CIO.
1944: The promise of tomorrow was grasped
when the G.I. Bill of Rights was passed.
1946: A post war baby boom grew strong
and Dr. Spock came along.
1948: The common man became one voice
when Harry S. Truman was elected the people’s choice.
1953: The discovery of the structure of DNA
defines who we are today.
1963: Desegregation and equality
was why the March on Washington made history.
1973:A cover-up began. The trail led straight
to the Democratic Party’s Watergate.
1986: The first official Martin Luther King day
was celebrated in January, on a Monday.
1989: Triumphant spirits cheered across town
as the Berlin wall came tumbling down.
1990:The ubiquitous communication we have today
is because of the Internet, the Information Highway.
1990: Stop discrimination with kindness and tact.
Remember The Americans with Disabilities Act?
2000: Counting the ballots was not much fun,
but George W. Bush had finally won!
2001: September 11th, one moment in time
we were faced with a mountain we’d all have to climb.
2003: Standing tall and united as one
we’ll leave no stone unturned or heart unsung.
What America’s future holds for me
Is prayer that the soldier will keep me free.
What America’s future holds for me
Is hope that the sailor will calm the sea.
What America’s future holds for me
Is faith that Blue Angels will claim victory.
What America’s future holds for me
Is the might of the amphibious approach by sea.
What America’s future holds for me
Is strength in numbers by air, land, and sea.
What America’s future holds for me
Are the tears I shed as we fight to be free.
What America’s future holds for me
Is the day our nation claims victory!
What America’s future holds for me?
Maybe college to become what I want to be.
What America’s future holds for me?
A family? A job? Who knows what will be?
What America’s future holds for me
Is the unknown that remains to be seen.
What America’s future holds for me
I guess I’ll have to wait and see!
