Taste of Chicago Concert Pictures - 2001

Waylon Jennings, Asleep at the Wheel
KC and the Sunshine Band, and America

Every year for the past 21 years, Chicago has had a huge, week-long picnic called 'Taste of Chicago' which seems to get better every year. Besides having booths set up selling food from many of the city area's restaurants, they have free concerts each day. This year I went to the Waylon Jennings/Asleep at the Wheel concert and the KC and the Sunshine Band/America concert. Below are a few of the pictures I took.

Asleep at the Wheel

Asleep at the Wheel opened for Waylon Jennings. They were okay, but were evidently short at least one musician because, as you will noticed if you look closely, they had to borrow the steel guitar player from Waylon Jennings' band.

Waylon Jennings looked and sounded good, as did his wife, Jessie Coulter (the one standing closest to him), who sang I'm Not Lisa. He said they have been married 31 years. She doesn't even look 31 years old, does she?

Although he had to be brought in and taken out by wheelchair, and he remained seated the whole time, Waylon seemed to otherwise be his usual jovial self. Among other songs, he sang Amanda and Good Hearted Woman.

Waylon Jennings had a great band. If I'm not mistaken, I believe they said it was an all-star band. I've included this picture because it looks as if at least three of them are looking right at me. This was near the end of the concert. I wonder if they were wondering if I was ever going to run out of film.

KC turned 50 this year, and seemed to be trying to prove that he isn't really that old. Although he had to take frequent breaks at the keyboard, he did spend a lot of time keeping up with the girls on the dance floor, as you can see. Way to go, KC!!!

America
America

Ah, the golden voice of golden-haired Gerry Beckley singing "Sister Golden Hair" was unforgettable. Of course, they played some new songs and all of their old hits as well, including Horse With No Name, Tin Man and Ventura Highway. Click on the picture above to see more pictures of America.

If you're ever in Chicago at the end of June and beginning of July, be sure and visit the Taste!
