RECOVERY

Anyone who has a serious illness
can draw upon six sources of healing:
medical, physical, mental, social,
emotional, and spiritual.

Medical technology has advanced amazingly, but we also recognize that its essential role is to optimize the conditions that enable the body's natural forces to do the ultimate healing. Physically, our bodies have great resiliency and capacity, but we have to use wisdom in making them as strong, healthy, and vital as possible through proper nutrition, exercise, and rest. Mentally, we need to visualize internal bodily forces over coming the disease--for in-stance, to literally see the immune system kick in, and the white blood cells successfully destroying the disease-spreading cells. We also need to take responsibility for our recovery and to learn as much as possible about what is happening--about the diagnosis and about alternative plans of treatment. Socially, we need to surround ourselves with caring people, particularly loved ones, who bring hope and support to our hearts and minds and with whom we can intimately communicate. Emotionally, we need to tap into as many positive attitudes on a consistent basis as is possible--such as hope, because it power- fully impacts biology; such as confidence in the reco- very process; such as giving love and service; such as having a magnificent attitude in the face of very dif- ficult circumstances; and, such as receiving the love and affirmation of others. Spiritually, we need to draw upon our faith, our deep internal belief system, and upon those of our faith who can minister to our spiritual hunger and needs. We can also serve others, if only in maintaining a beautiful attitude in the face of devastating terminal illness.

As Teilhard de Chardin put it,

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience;
we are spiritual beings having a human experience."

SURVIVAL TIPS

  1. Set the intention to heal. Make the decision that you want to get well (even if you don't know how).
  2. Reach out for support--to other people and to your higher power.
  3. Ask your higher power for the courage and endurance to stay in the pain until it repatterns.
Douglas Bloch, M.A.

"There is not one of us in whom a devil does not dwell.
At some time, at some point, that devil masters each of us.
It is not having been in the dark house,
but having left it, that counts."

Teddy Roosevelt
