No Shame In Depression

Depression seem to be something that

we as Christians more than non-Christian

seem to want to hide from others. The world

has attached a stigma to depression, so

we don't want to admit that we get depressed.

I am here to tell you that sooner or later most

of us experience some form of depression.

It can creep upon us slowly, and we are there

before we even know we were going in that

direction, or it can hit us like a ton of bricks

and the darkness become so overwhelming

we can't seem to even cope with everyday

routines. Their is "NO" shame with being

depressed . It can be the result of a real

situation of failure or loss or bad news it

can invade our minds for no discernible

reason, if that is the case, that is when

we go to a doctor it may be a chemical

unbalance that may take medicine .I want

to say here ,that some, in the Christian

circles, believe that if we go to a doctor we

aren't believing in for God to heal us. All

I can respond to this is that God gave

us doctors, and medicine. In fact Luke

was a doctor. Going to a doctor doesn't

limit God's healing power or the method

that he chooses to use. There is no Sin

Sin in seeking them out. So don't let the

devil get into that trap. Well Guess what?

If anyone suffers from, we are in good

company. The Bible includes who

experience depression of all kinds, and

parts of Scripture were written by people

in the midst of feelings of depression.

The good news is that God does not

regard depression as sin, I know many

of us have either heard it preached or

at least left impression that if we are ,or

have been depressed we are in sin. But

Praise God ! we will see in God's Word

He does not consider it "Sin, "but rather

He responds to thoughts who suffer

its darkness with great tenderness,

understanding and compassion.

Psalm 139 1-12

O Lord, you have examined my heart and

know everything about me. You know when

I sit down or stand up. You know my every

thought when far away. You chart the path

ahead of me and tell me where to stop and

rest. Every moment you know where I am.

You know what I am going to say even before

I say it, Lord. You both precede and follow

me. You place your hand of blessing on my

head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,

to great for me to know! I can never escape

from your spirit! I can never get away from

your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are

there, if I go down to the place of death, you

are there. If I ride the wings of the morning,

if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there

your strength will support me. I could ask the

darkness to hide me and the light around me

to become night, but even in darkness I

can not hide from you. To you the night

shines as bright as day. Darkness and

light are both alike to you.

We see here in the above scriptures ,that there

Is no depth to which we can descend that God

Is not present with us. When depression comes,

We have to remember that even though we can't

See are feel His presence, He has not abandoned

us. We have to hang on to the fact that He has

Promised that "He would never leave us nor

forsaken us." He is a friend that sticks closer

than a brother.

Psalms130:1-8

From the depth of despair, O Lord, I call

For your help. Hear my cry, O Lord. Pay

attention to my prayer. Lord if you kept a

record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever

survive? But you offer forgiveness, that

we might learn to fear you. I am counting

on the Lord, yes, I am counting on him.

I have put my hope in his word. I long

for the Lord more than sentries long for

the dawn, yes, more than sentries long

for the dawn. O Israel, hope in the Lord, for

with the Lord there is unfailing love and

an overflowing supply of salvation. He

himself will free Israel from every kind

of sin.

The one thing we learn here is that when we

Fear God," I want to stop here and say that

fearing God doesn't mean fear as we know it,

it means to respect God." So when we

respect God we can cry out to Him in prayer

even in our deepest despair and He will hear

us. Not only will He hear us He will respond

to our need. Praise God! Isn't it comforting

to know that we have a God that love us?

That He is never turned off as others even

as our dearest friends are at times.

Isaiah 53:3

He was despised and rejected, a man of

Sorrows , acquainted with bitterest grief.

We turned our backs on him and looked the

other way when he went by. He was despised

and we did not care.

The reason we know that Jesus can

related to depression, is because he

has been there. How do we know this?

The Word tell us this is so. He understands

all the pains of life, He has walked in every

situation of life that all humans walk in, yes

even" Depression."

Matthew 11:28-30

Then Jesus come unto me, all of you who

are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I

will give you rest. Take my yoke upon

you. Let me teach you, because I am

humble and gentle, and you will find

rest for your souls. For my yolk fits

perfectly and the burden I give you

is light.

If we would just take Jesus at His word, we

would not try to handle things on our own.

Jesus cares deeply for us when we are

weary ,broken ,depressed or what ever

life has dealt us, bottom line He cares, and

provides acceptance, love and rest for us.

We should be like "John", he leaned on

Jesus every chance he had, because he

Knew that he not only received rest, but love

and acceptance. There is no other place

to be but in Jesus. That is where I know

we who love Jesus all want to be is

in Him.

 Romans 8:39

Whether we are high above the sky or in

The deepest ocean, nothing in all creation

Will ever can separate us from the love of

God that is revealed in the Christ Jesus

our Lord.

Praise God not even life's worst depression

can separate us from the love of Christ.

This right here let us know that depression

is not a "Sin" as we have been in some cases

led to believe, and believe me when we get

the mind set, that it is sin ,something to be

ashamed of, then the old devil is going to be

right there to reinforce thought feelings of

unworthiness. That is when we read him the

Word of God, that "No weapon form against

Us shall prosper." Glory to God!

Judges 15:18

Now Samson was very thirsty, and he cried

Out to the Lord, "You have accomplished

This great victory by the strength of your

Servant, Must I now die of thirst and fall

Into the hands of these pagan people.

1st. Kings 19:3-4

Elijha was afraid and fled for his life. He

went to Beeersheba, a town in Judah, and

he left his servant there. Then he went on

alone into the desert, traveling all day. He

sat down under a solitary broom tree and

prayed that he might die. "I have had

enough, Lord," he said "Take my life,

for I am no better than my ancestors.

Often times we are made to feel that something is

Wrong with our faith. because we go into

depression .And the sad thing is that we buy into

that garbage, We see here that mighty men for

God suffered bouts of depression. Oft times ,

depression hits us when we have had great

achievements or spiritual victories. That maybe

that we aren't sure we feel like we are undeserving

and then the devil come in and cap on that and

we plunge down in depression. I have heard

people say ,on come on now, pull yourself

up and out of this, well I am here to tell it is

not always that easy for everyone. Some

people needs medical help, and there is no

shame in that either, if you have to stay on

medication all your life, it is no different than

those on diabetes medicine. And don't let the

old devil make it any different. Remember

there is" No Sin or Shame for being depressed

or battling depression. " Praise you

Jesus!!

Psalm 35:9

Then I will rejoice in the Lord. I will

be glad because he rescues me.

Psalm 40:1-3

I waited patiently for the Lord to help

me, and he turned to me and I heard

my cry.

Matthew 14:29-31

"All right come," Jesus said. So Peter

went over the side of the boat and walked

on water toward Jesus. But when he looked

around at the high waves, he was terrified

and began to sink. "Save me, Lord!" he

shouted. Instantly Jesus reached out his

hand and grabbed him." You don't have

much faith," Jesus said. "Why did you

doubt me?"

As we see here Jesus is always there to rescue

us. We have to keep our eyes on Him and

Him alone ,if not when we get into depression

the devil will take us under, It's not that

don't have faith or not enough faith or we

wouldn't get into a depressed state of mind.

God want us to know that it is all right

to get depressed, He understand, He love

us and will be there to catch us. I want to

say in closing that even if you have to be

on medication, that doesn't, that God is

not or will not heal you, God is in the

healing business, but there is no shame

or sin in depression, as we have seen

even men like David, Elijha, Jesus and

Peter to name a few fought bouts of

depression. So you see being

depressed is nothing new to this

day and time.

Lord Jesus I thank you for loving us so

even in all our frailties. Lord I pray that this

lesson you have given me will bring healing

from bondage. Let us see Lord that depression

is nothing to be ashamed of. Help us not

to point fingers and make others feel guilty

if they battle with depression. Help us as

sisters &brothers and show love, compassion

and understanding. Let us lift each other

up in prayer when it seems impossible to do

so for our selves. Lord keep us in the center

of your will. Thank you that you freed us from

bondage. Help us to rejoice in you without

ceasing. Amen & Amen!
