The Sickness Of Complacency

We have a sickness here in America, but really

not just in America but all over the world

and that sickness is called complacency.

Complacency takes many forms in our lives,

such as thinking something is to little or

to great, taking a causal attitude toward God

or a great problem confronting us, toward our

enemies. Dangers are on the horizon, and we

don't seem to see them as dangers such as

military, social, personal, spiritual. We are going

to have to quit being lazy or at ease when we

should be hard at work, the time is late and our

full involvement is needed. Satan is ready to strike,

and some don't even think he is there or even

worst, is some even believes satan exist. Lets

look at some examples of complacency they

have a smug attitudes of self-satisfaction,

attitudes that say "everything is fine because

I'm happy and comfortable." God has some

very strong words about complacency, especially

complacency toward Him and complacency

toward sin, for both puts us at great risk. As

we go through God's word on this subject

we will see that God loves us to much to lose

us without a fight.

Hosea 13:5-6

I took care of you in the wilderness, in that dry

And the thirsty land. But when you had eaten

And were satisfied, then you became proud and

forgot me.

As we see here, we are in danger of becoming

complacent, when God shows His goodness

toward us. When we are in need, we usually take

God more seriously. But when we are fed, comfortable

and prosperous, it is easier to become complacent

about God. It is a wise person who remembers that

no matter what our circumstances are in this life

God is with us daily in times of both need and

prosperity. When we forget this we are in danger

of falling in the trap of complacency.

James 4:17

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought

to do and then not do it.

God takes rightness seriously, and so should

God people. God tell us that complacent is sin.

God tell us to know what is right and then be

Complacent about it, or unwilling to do it is sin.

Revelation 3:15-17

"I know all the things you do, that you do neither

hot nor cold. I wish you were one or the other!

But since you are lukewarm water, I will spit you

out of my mouth! You say, I am rich. I have everything

I want. I don't need a thing!" and you don't realize

that you are wretched and miserable and poor and

blind and naked.

Complacency leads to indifference, which leads,

which leads to idleness. To stand for nothing

is to stand against God. That is why it is so

dangerous for us to become complacent. I

can honestly say, I have never seen so many of

us who call ourselves Christians that are lukewarm

and complacent regarding just about any thing

from gender lifestyles, abortion, sex outside of

marriage and on and on. You can't even get God's

people to agree. How sad, How grieved God

must be.

Judges 16:16-17

So day after day she nagged him until he couldn't

stand it any longer. finally, Samson told her his

secret "My hair has never been cut," he confessed

"for I was dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth.

If my head were shaved, my strength would leave

me, and I would become as weak as anyone else."

We see here in this scripture, what happened to

Samson for becoming complacent about his

God given responsibility, as a leader he gave

in and told Delilah the secret to his strength.

He thought it wouldn't matter, he thought every

thing would still be just fine. Does this attitude

sound familiar? Samson's complacency was a sin,

because he disobeyed God's command not to tell

anyone, and he let down his entire nation. The

sin of complacency will destroy everyone and every

thing as it did Samson and the nation, if we do not

stay on guard. The Word of God tells us to guard

our heart so we won't be caught off guard.

1st.Kings 11:1-4

Now King Solomon loved many foreign women.

Besides Pharaoh's daughter, he married women

from Moab, Ammon. Edom. Sidon, and from

among the Hittites. The Lord had clearly instructed

his people not to intermarry with those nations,

because the woman they married would lead them

to worship their gods. Yet Solomon insisted on

loving them anyway. He had seven hundred wives

and three hundred concubines. And sure enough

they led his heart away from the Lord. In Solomon's

old age, they turned his heart to worship their gods

instead of trusting only in the Lord his God, as his

father, David, had done.

What can be said about Solomon, a man that

with all his riches and the blessings of God, a

man who wanted every thing he saw, and in his

sinful desires, became complacent toward God and

God's commands, it led him into sin and all its

devastating consequences. Because of God's

love for us, He warns us of what the end results

will be when we become complacent.

Deuteronomy 1:41-42

"Then you confessed, "We have sinned against

the Lord! We will go into the land and fight for it,

as the Lord our God has told us." So your men

strapped on their weapons, thinking it would be

easy to conquer the hill country. But the Lord said

to me ,"Tell them not to attack, for I will not go

with them. If they do, they will be crushed by their

enemies.

As we see here, the Israelites were complacent and

refused to take the risk God called them to in

conquering the Promised Land. Then they changed

their minds, yet failed to heed God's warning that

he was no longer with them. Does this sound like

something that has happened to us or someone

we know? We tend to forget that every thing in our

lives is timed, their is a time to live, and a time to

die, God has a plan for our lives but it is in His

time not ours. Like the Israelites if we become

complacent and disobedient we can miss God's

timing and lose his protection. We must never be

complacent about the job God calls us to do or

his ability to help us do it.

Job 21:17

Yet the wicked get away with it time and time again.

They rarely have trouble, and God skips

them when he distributes sorrows in his anger.

How many times have we ask or heard someone say

"Why doesn't God punish the wicked?" Well we see

in the above scripture that the wicked are often not

punished for their wickedness and complacency

because they will not listen to correction. They may

prosper materially, but in reality a hard heart is

no longer open to discipline is one life's greatest

tragedies. We have to remember that God chastises

those He loves, and even though we think the wicked

have it made. All I can say is sooner or later they will

have to come face to face with God and give and answer

to Him for what they have did with the sacrifice of

His son Jesus Christ for their sins?

Father I come to you to ask forgiveness for our

sin sickness of complacency, Help us to recognize

when we are being lukewarm , Lord let us not be

a sickness in your mouth. Lord you are worthy of our

obedience, Lord let us not miss out on your plan

for our lives. Let us remember that we are to be

a lamp on the lamp post, the light that shines in the

darkness. Thank you Father for your love and the trust

you have placed in us your children. Keep us under

your wings of protection as we go our way, give us

the courage and the will to broaden our boundaries.

Let us be pleasing in your sight, in every thing

we do, let us lives bring glory to your name.

Oh, Father I praise and thank you, that even

Though we get weary you promised to never

leave us nor forsake us. Thank you Father that

you are only a whisper away.

Amen & Amen
